I don't often play as a player but when I do, I create a fully living and breathing character that will fit in the group and gameplay that we're about to play. My characters want to go out on adventures, they have rough edges and light backstories so they can either evolve within the game or just be the reason of why I go out to adventure. For me it's about to create memorable experience for everyone and I include all forms of (silly) voices for all tones of play. From goofy to full on serious moments.
