HeroQuest (2021)

Newbie friendly
It's a semi-cooperative dungeon-crawling board game for 2–5 players designed to streamline the fantasy role-playing experience into a streamlined, accessible tabletop format. The game features 65+ detailed plastic miniatures, modular plastic walls, and furniture to create dynamic, hidden dungeons that players explore using a roll-and-move mechanic.
Gameplay Mechanics
Roles: One player acts as Zargon (the Game Master), controlling monsters, traps, and quest progression, while the other 1–4 players control classic fantasy heroes: the Barbarian, Wizard, Elf, and Dwarf.
Objective: Heroes must complete specific quest objectives—such as defeating a boss, retrieving an artifact, or escaping—while surviving encounters with monsters controlled by Zargon.
Combat & Movement: Movement is determined by rolling two red dice, and combat is resolved using custom six-sided dice with skulls (hits) and shields (blocks). Heroes have unique abilities, such as the Wizard casting spells or the Dwarf disarming traps.
Progression: The game includes 14 linked quests in the core quest book, allowing heroes to accumulate gold and equipment between sessions to grow stronger.
Key Features
Accessibility: The rules are simple enough for beginners and families, avoiding the complex character sheets and skill trees of traditional RPGs.
Replayability: While the core 14-quest campaign provides a narrative arc, the modular board allows for varied layouts. The game also supports a Companion App for solo play or groups without a dedicated Game Master.
Expansions: The 2021 release supports classic expansions like Kellar’s Keep and Return of the Witch Lord, which add new quests, monsters, and hero options.
Target Audience: Ideal for players seeking a nostalgic, narrative-driven dungeon crawler with less tactical depth than modern heavyweights like Gloomhaven or Descent, but with more structure than open-ended tabletop RPGs.
