Old School Renaissance (OSR) (2000)

Recommend:

Overview

The Old School Renaissance, Old School Revival or OSR is a play style movement in tabletop role-playing games which draws inspiration from the earliest days of tabletop RPGs in the 1970s, especially Dungeons & Dragons. Prominent standalone rule systems produced within this movement include Old School Essentials, Swords & Wizardry, and Labyrinth Lord. Description The OSR movement first developed in the early 2000s, primarily in discussion on internet forums. OSR games encourage a tonal fidelity to early editions of Dungeons & Dragons—less emphasis on predefined endings, and a greater emphasis on player choice determining the fate of characters. OSR Games provide play where wrong decisions can easily become lethal for characters and do not guarantee satisfying endings to character arcs. Characters live and die by player choice as opposed to the story's needs System Overview & Key Features
Rulings Over Rules Rather than providing comprehensive mechanics for all potential scenarios, OSR systems rely on the Game Master to adjudicate outcomes based on the players' stated actions. This approach is intended to expedite gameplay and encourage lateral thinking over rule memorization.
High Lethality Player characters possess low survivability, particularly at early levels. Game mechanics often dictate that a single error or unfavorable dice roll can result in immediate character death. This design element encourages players to avoid direct combat and approach the game world with caution.
Player Skill over Character Skill Game resolution depends heavily on the player's descriptive input rather than the character's numerical statistics. For example, instead of rolling a die to detect a hidden object, a player must explicitly state that their character is searching a specific area or manipulating a particular mechanism.
Gold as Experience Character advancement in many OSR games is directly tied to the acquisition of treasure rather than the defeat of enemies. Characters gain experience points primarily by extracting valuables from dangerous locations and returning them to a safe environment. This heavily incentivizes acquiring loot while avoiding unnecessary combat.
Resource Management Game mechanics require the strict tracking of consumable items such as rations, light sources, ammunition, and carrying capacity (encumbrance). Depleting essential resources in a hazardous environment poses a significant mechanical penalty, making inventory management a central component of gameplay.
Reaction Rolls and Morale Non-player characters and creatures do not default to immediate hostility. Game Masters utilize randomized reaction tables to determine the initial disposition of encountered entities, which can range from hostile to friendly. Additionally, adversaries are subject to Morale checks during combat, dictating whether they continue fighting or attempt to flee when at a disadvantage.

Dolmenwood

Roleplay focused Roleplay focused

The forest is old, older than kings, older than roads, older than the words used to name it. Moss covered stones whisper half remembered oaths. Lantern light bends strangely between the trees. Bells toll where no church stands. This campaign is set in Dolmenwood, a fairytale wilderness on the edge of a crumbling human realm. It is a land of crooked paths and stranger customs, where faerie courts feud behind smiling masks, saints lie uneasily in their graves, and villages cling to tradition as protection against the unknown. You will play ordinary folk and wandering adventurers drawn into the Wood by coin, duty, curiosity, or desperation. Survival favors caution, clever bargains, and old superstitions as much as iron. Violence is quick and dangerous. Words matter. Expect: Fairytale whimsy & folklore horror Exploration and social encounters A living world shaped by your choices Style & Rules: Rules-light, OSR-style sandbox hexcrawl No planned main plot, play is player-driven Randomly rolled stats Dangerous, unbalanced world where consequences matter Logistics: Platform: Fantasy Grounds (free for players) and discord Schedule: Weekly on Friday evenings  Length: Short-to-medium campaign, with room to continue New players are welcome! As long as you are making a good effort I am happy to help with learning the ropes. I aim to foster a fun low stress enviroment.  The Wood is not evil. But it is not kind.

Old school dungeon adventure

I would like to introduce you an old school way of playing D&D. System is a modern take on early edition of D&D. It is rules light, so it is simple to run and emphasize is on role play and less about dice and numbers.  Idea is to do dungeon crawl adventure which can expand to multuple sessions or even quests. I would start with a session-0 where I would explain the game a bit more. Introduce ourselves. Have a discussion on our expectations from gaming. And in the end build or introduce characters. What I am hoping my game would provide is: immersion, player choices, risk-reward and funny moments. In vein of old-school games, I am also wanting to reward player creativity on planning, etc. The rules are free (PDF): https://whiteboxgame.blogspot.com/

Hello, I'm looking for players to help me get my chops back after a few years away from the table. Things have changed a lot and I'm a bit intimidated by the scene. I'm hoping to run various rpgs, in two hour blocks on Mondays - Fridays, 10am-2:30pm, while my youngest is in school. I run old school Fantasy and new school Sci-fi. I especially love the Fate System and I'm currently into Savage Worlds and Tricube Tales. Let's throw dice together!

I'm in EST [GMT+5] and would need to be done by midnight, but outside that my schedule is pretty flexible. I'm not new to role-playing: I've had some experience with ADND, ADND2e, DND5e2014, Shadowrun, PF1e, PF2e, Shadowdark. I'm especially interested in experiencing FATE, Shadowdark, OSR, Freebooters, but open to most systems. I don't just want to crunch numbers or kill kill kill. I do like a bit of killing as much as the next guy (depending on the next guy), but maybe there are other options we could try. I like tables where everyone is at least trying to roleplay, even if it doesn't come that naturally. Personally, I enjoy voicing my characters. I do NOT like getting bogged down by rules: I want to spend time _role-playing_, not wrestling with mechanics. -So it's really helpful when the game-master either knows the relevant rules or has mastered the art of winging it. I do enjoy Tolkienesque fantasy worlds quite a bit, but could also enjoy other genres such as science fiction / shadowrun / steampunk / post-apocalypse and more. I'm completely fine with a very slow leveling curve: delayed rewards are more meaningful. I haven't done online roleplaying before, but I'm quite computer-literate and I'm confident I can get my system set up well in advance of play-time. I appreciate Japanese culture and language, so bonus points if you do too. I'm over 50 years old, if that matters. I'm left-wing but have never brought that to a gaming table. I don't discriminate against anyone for their identity. If anyone has a lead on a suitable group, please let me know, thanks.
