The Unchained — Hexcrawl Adventure
Hello all,
I am a semi-experienced DM who has run in-person, virtual, and text-based campaigns in the past. Lately, I have been more interested in the exploration, survival, and freeform roleplay side of D&D, and I wanted to try building a homebrewed overland adventure around those elements.
This game would be a sandbox-style hexcrawl focused on player choice, discovery, and open-ended exploration. Rather than following a fixed story path, the group would be dropped into a dangerous and unfamiliar region and would decide for themselves where to go, what rumors to follow, who to trust, and what risks are worth taking. Travel, supplies, terrain, weather, and decisions on the road would all matter, especially early on.
The campaign begins with the party as thralls aboard a slave galley bound for market, until a storm wrecks the ship on a hostile coast. Your captor is dead, your chains are broken, and the beach is scattered with whatever food, tools, weapons, and cargo the sea has not yet taken. From there, the direction of the campaign is up to the group.
The tone I am aiming for is grounded, atmospheric, and adventure-driven, but closer to sword-and-sorcery in the Conan vein than heroic fantasy. It is a harsher world of ruins, raiders, slavers, old shrines, and local powers, where mature themes like decadence, sensuality, exploitation, and violence may exist in the background without becoming the main focus of play.
The game would be hosted through Roll20 for both live text roleplay and combat, so everything stays in one place. The main format would be live text on Wednesdays from 8 AM to 12 PM Eastern, with possible play-by-post between sessions if the group is interested.
We would be using the 2024 D&D ruleset for the most part, with character creation generally limited to the races and options available there.
I am mainly looking for players who enjoy text roleplay, exploration, and a slower, more deliberate style of game. This probably would not be a great fit for people looking for a heavily guided story, constant combat, or a casual drop-in game.
If this sounds interesting, feel free to reach out with any questions and a basic character concept pitch.
